Spaniel Heritage Project

Mark Neff, PhD, Associate Director, VGL Canine Genetics & Genomics, The Center for Veterinary Genetics,The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine has requested the participation of Welsh Springer breeders and owners in the collection of DNA samples to assist in a project aimed as using DNA evidence to help define the spaniel family tree.

Several anecdotal histories suggest that a dozen breeds belong to the ‘spaniel’ lineage. The intent of the study is to test hypothetical breed relationships using state-of-the-art DNA technology. There is practical value to this study -- if indeed the spaniel breeds are related, then mapping data from multiple breeds can be pooled to more effectively map disease genes. Thus, the historical data will benefit future health-related studies. At the end of the study, findings will be posted online and emails will be sent out to alert participants of the results. Depending on how quickly a sufficient number of cheek swab DNAs can be obtained, the study should be complete within six months.

Kits can also be requested directly through http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/requestform/

Completed collections should be mailed directly to the University of California, Davis in the supplied pre-paid envelope.
